ANDRIY ANTONІUK (1941/1943, Pervomaisk, Mykolaiv Region – April 16, 2013) – a famous painter; member of the National Union of Artists of Ukraine (1970), Honored Artist of the USSR (1989), People’s Artist of Ukraine (2007), winner of the prize. V. Stus (1993), laureate of the National Prize of Ukraine named after Taras Shevchenko (1994, for a series of paintings: “Metropolitan Hilarion”, “Theophanes Prokopovich”, “Worship of the Earth and Waters”, “Madonna of Bogopol”, “Conversation with the Universe”, “Trumpets of the Voice. Caution”). He was awarded the gold medal of the National Academy of Arts of Ukraine (2002) and the title of “Man of the Year” (2006). He graduated from the Odessa Art School (1962, teachers O. Atsmanchuk, T. Egorova). In 1965–1971 he worked at the Odessa Art Foundation, and from 1971 in Mykolayiv.

The artist’s work, which is dominated by artistic understanding of the historical past of the Ukrainian people, is characterized by the influence of naive folk art and the symbolism of expressionism.
In 1967–1985 he took an active part in republican and all-union exhibitions.

The artist’s works are stored in leading museums of Ukraine, in one of the galleries in Madrid, as well as in private collections in England, Germany, Spain, Slovakia, the Czech Republic and the United States.
